We are proud to announce that Mada al-Carmel, under the leadership of Dr. Himmat Zoubi and Dr. Areen Hawari, and in collaboration with the Master of Israel Studies Program at Birzeit University, has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious 2025 Urban Studies Foundation (USF) Seminar Series Awards.
Our project, “Urbicide in Gaza: Spatial Violence, Reconstruction, and Resistance,” will bring together scholars, architects, planners, and activists to examine how the situation in Gaza reveals the workings of settler colonialism and urbicide in Palestine. This international seminar series places the urbicide in Gaza within the broader framework of a longstanding pattern of destruction and spatial violence that has targeted Palestinian life and cities since the inception of the Zionist project. By exploring the intersections of architecture, memory, and urban space, the project highlights Palestinian experiences of survival and resistance. It generates critical knowledge on urbicide as a settler-colonial practice that continues to undermine Palestinian liberation, political agency, and the construction of a society that is rooted in historical continuity and collective aspirations.
