New edition of the book “The Ruptured Political Discourse and Other Studies”, by Dr. Azmi Bishara (June 2026)

Mada al-Carmel is reissuing this book over two and a half decades after its first publication, in the context of the genocide and the associated implications for Palestinians inside the Green Line. This moment calls for re-engagement with the questions dealt with in the book, the theories it advanced, and the challenges it posed, which all had a profound impact on the national, political, and intellectual consciousness of many of those who read it.

The book remains a significant milestone in the study of Palestinians inside the Green Line, even amid the genocide in the Gaza Strip and its repercussions for Palestinian society inside the Green Line. This is firstly because it maintains a clear focus on the conflict with Zionism, never losing sight of it no matter how bleak the reality may appear, and secondly because of its conviction that political agency has a role to play, even in the most complex of circumstances.

The book contains a collection of articles written during the 1990s about the reality of the time and the future of that part of the Palestinian Arab people who live inside the Green Line under the framework of Israeli citizenship. It moves between sociology, political science, philosophy, and democratic theory, engaging with the contradictions that structure the relationship between Palestinians inside the Green Line and their Israeli citizenship as a fundamental element of the political and social reality, rather than as a matter that can be circumvented or ignored.

The new edition of The Truncated Political Discourse by Dr. Azmi Bishara is now available to read in electronic format on Mada al-Carmel’s website, as part of its efforts to make Palestinian research and knowledge more available and broaden access to its publications.
